Everest Tea Garden, Bhotechaur
Nepal’s “Mini Ilam”
Tucked into Bhotechaur in Sindhupalchowk, the Everest Tea Garden is a locally operated estate that visitors often call “Mini Ilam”, because its tea slopes resemble the famous landscapes of eastern Nepal. It lies roughly 35 to 40 km from central Kathmandu, a drive of about 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The route leaves the city’s edge behind and passes through Sankhu, with villages, farmland and forest opening up along the way.
The estate covers about 1,500 ropanis and specialises in orthodox green and black teas. On the visit, you walk between neat rows of tea bushes, learn how fresh shoots are picked and enjoy open views of the rolling hills. The cool air, quiet pace and green terraces make it a gentle contrast to the busy valley.
The garden can be visited all year, with lush greenery in the monsoon and clearer skies and milder temperatures in autumn and spring. With its peaceful scenery, simple rural charm and hands-on tea experience, it suits families, nature lovers and travellers looking for an easy escape from Kathmandu.
