Australian Camp
Into the heart of the Annapurnas
Perched at about 2,100 m above Pokhara, Australian Camp (also known as Australian Base Camp) is one of the most popular short treks in the Annapurna region. It is named after Australian trekkers who camped here, and it is known for close, uninterrupted views of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and, on clear days, Dhaulagiri. The trail begins at Kande, about an hour’s drive from Pokhara, and climbs through forests of rhododendron and oak and past terraced farmland. Because of its modest altitude and short walking days, it suits first-time trekkers, families and travelers short on time, and it is a rewarding way to see the Himalayas up close. The trek continues to Dhampus, a traditional Gurung village with stone-paved lanes and a view of the peaks, before descending to Phedi.
