Bhairab Kunda
A Sacred Lake in the Sindhupalchok Hills
Bhairab Kunda lies in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchok district, north-east of the Kathmandu Valley, at about 4,250 m. Although it is close to the capital, the lake has remained a quiet trekking destination. It sits along the Nepal-Tibet border and is revered by Hindus and Buddhists alike.
According to Hindu belief, Lord Shiva created the lake by driving his trident into the ground. Its name means “Lake of Bhairav”, the fierce form of Shiva, and pilgrims gather in June and July for a holy bath and ceremonies. The setting adds to the atmosphere, with a high alpine basin below rugged peaks, prayer flags and a stillness that makes the lake feel far from the city. The surrounding views include the Jugal Himal and Gaurishankar ranges, and the lake freezes over in February.
The route to the lake passes through rural villages, forests, alpine meadows and traditional grazing areas. Local hosts in the villages of the Bhotekoshi area offer warm hospitality, and a night in a homestay is a good way to get a feel for mountain life before the final hike. With a moderate level of trekking, a sacred destination and fewer crowds than the better-known Langtang routes, Bhairab Kunda suits pilgrims, nature lovers and trekkers who want a short journey with real meaning.
