Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is one of Nepal's most remarkable natural destinations, located in the floodplains of the Sapta Koshi River in southeastern Nepal. Established in 1976 to protect the endangered wild water buffalo, locally known as Arna, the reserve covers approximately 175 square kilometres of wetlands, grasslands, river channels, marshes, and riverine forests. In 1987, it became Nepal's first Ramsar site, recognizing its international importance as a wetland ecosystem.
Koshi Tappu is particularly famous for its rich biodiversity and exceptional birdlife, making it one of Nepal's best destinations for birdwatching and nature tourism. More than 500 bird species have been recorded in the wider reserve and Koshi Barrage area, including resident birds and migratory species arriving from Siberia and other parts of Central Asia during winter. Visitors may also encounter wildlife such as wild water buffalo, wild boar, hog deer, spotted deer, blue bull, jackals, and various reptiles. The Koshi River is also known for occasional sightings of the endangered Gangetic dolphin.
