Namobuddha
A Sacred Hilltop Pilgrimage Site
Rising above the green hills of Kavrepalanchok, east of the Kathmandu Valley, Namobuddha is one of Nepal’s most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites. According to legend, this is where a prince in a past life of the Buddha offered his own body to feed a starving tigress and her cubs, a story that has made the hilltop a symbol of compassion and selflessness. Pilgrims have been climbing to the site for centuries, and the sacred stupa that marks the place is still circled daily by devotees.
Close to the stupa, the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery adds a living spiritual presence, with monks in maroon robes, the sound of horns and chanting, and prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Visitors are welcome to observe, walk the paths quietly and take in the calm atmosphere. The surrounding pine forests, terraced fields and village trails offer a peaceful setting, and on clear days the Himalayan ranges appear in the distance.
Easily combined with Panauti and Dhulikhel, Namobuddha suits pilgrims, hikers and culture lovers looking for a calm, meaningful day outside the city.
