Panauti
A Living Newari Heritage Town
Just 32 km southeast of Kathmandu, Panauti is one of Nepal’s best-preserved medieval Newari towns. It sits at the sacred Tribeni confluence of the Punyamati and Roshi rivers. Its 13th-century Indreshwor Mahadev Temple, among the oldest pagoda-style temples in Nepal, anchors a historic townscape of carved windows, brick lanes and riverside shrines.
Today, Panauti is a model of community-based tourism. Travelers can stay in a traditional homestay, share home-cooked Newari meals with a local family, and explore temple courtyards at a gentle pace. Close to Namobouddha and Bhaktapur, it is an ideal, authentic start to your journey through Nepal.
