Climbing and Expeditions

Climbing and Expeditions

Nepal is one of the world's most celebrated destinations for mountaineering, peak climbing, and high-altitude expeditions. Home to eight of the world's fourteen mountains above 8,000 metres, including Mount Everest (8,848.86m), the country offers extraordinary opportunities for climbers, from introductory trekking peaks to some of the most challenging Himalayan summits. The eight 8,000-metre mountains associated with Nepal are Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Annapurna I.

With spectacular mountain landscapes, dramatic glaciers, remote valleys, and rich Sherpa and other Himalayan cultures, Nepal attracts professional mountaineers, adventure enthusiasts, and expedition teams from across the globe. Whether you dream of climbing a trekking peak, attempting a technical Himalayan mountain, or reaching the summit of an iconic 8,000-metre giant, Nepal offers a remarkable range of mountaineering experiences.

Beyond Everest, Nepal's Himalayas contain hundreds of mountains opened for mountaineering. The Department of Tourism's 2025 publication reports that 461 peaks had officially been opened for mountaineering at the time of publication, with many different levels of climbing difficulty and expedition requirements.

Mountaineering opportunities range from glacier walks and trekking peak ascents to demanding technical climbs and extended expeditions involving high-altitude camps, fixed ropes, acclimatization rotations, and specialist support.
