Kirtipur
A Hilltop Newar Town
Perched on a ridge southwest of Kathmandu, Kirtipur is one of the valley’s oldest Newar towns and has long been a place apart from the busy city below. Its name means “city of glory”, and its hilltop position once made it a proud, independent settlement that resisted rulers for years before the unification of Nepal. Today it remains a living community of red-brick houses, stone-paved lanes and small courtyards, with wide views over the Kathmandu Valley.
The town’s spiritual life centres on two landmarks. The three-storey Bagh Bhairab Temple, dedicated to a fierce form of Shiva, is one of Kirtipur’s most important shrines. The Uma Maheshwar Temple, reached by a stone stairway lined with carved elephants, crowns the ridge. Beyond the temples, Kirtipur is known for its Newari food traditions, its warm community spirit and its quiet, unhurried pace.
With few tourists, authentic local life and easy access from Kathmandu, Kirtipur is ideal for travellers who prefer a village walk or a home-cooked Newari meal to a crowded sightseeing day.
