Langtang
The Valley of Glaciers
Just north of Kathmandu, Langtang National Park protects one of Nepal’s most accessible Himalayan wildernesses. The trail climbs through rhododendron, oak and bamboo forests, home to the elusive red panda, Himalayan black bear and langur monkeys, before opening into a wide glacial valley beneath Langtang Lirung (7,227 m).
The valley is also a living cultural landscape. Tamang communities, with deep Tibetan roots, live in stone-built villages, herd yaks and keep Buddhist traditions alive through prayer flags, mani walls and monasteries. The cultural highlight is Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m, a peaceful monastery set below ice-draped peaks and close to a local yak cheese factory.
With an overland start from Kathmandu and a well-paced route that includes an acclimatization day, Langtang suits first-time trekkers and experienced hikers with limited time.
